What is it about September? Kids go back to school and families settle into a routine that usually lasts at least 9 months. With or without the reminder of Halloween merchandise already on display, we start to look ahead to major traditional holidays. For me, it always also feels like a second chance, a last run at 2021. Just as the family dynamic changes in September, so does the business dynamic, I think. It’s subtle, kind of like knowing when you are 1.2 miles from the end of this year’s 26.2 mile marathon to advance our businesses.
The New Business Cycle Is Predictable Each Year, Right?
As business owners, we are always strategizing and looking for new opportunities. We begin each new year with new goals and new plans for achieving them. There is new energy and we track our progress. The shorter, darker days help us focus on achieving our New Year’s goals. By mid-March, there can be a slump. The days are longer and warmer. Spring breaks start happening. We can smell the barbeques cranking for the Memorial Day cookouts. Distractions are easier to allow. Before you know it, the kids are out for the summer, family vacations are soon, the dog days are hot—then BAM! It’s Labor Day again. Are you afraid to look at your goal sheet for this year?
Let’s Make A Last Run At 2021
I’m grateful to have a long holiday weekend ahead and I don’t want to yammer on about the glories of owning a small business. But I do believe I can feel a last glimmer of competitiveness. I hear that small, challenging voice asking, “You gonna settle, then?” And each year, my answer has been the same. No. I won’t settle. I offer valuable services that can help others. The mission is sound. So I will make a last run at 2021.
We Have About 111 Days Left To Do Business This Year—That Is 30% Of The Year
If you give up Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve that leaves about 111 days to do some good business. Folks, that is 30% of the year left! That’s a lot. My business plan is not predicated on only being productive for 2/3 of a year. Yikes! Okay—I’m going to enjoy every moment of this long Labor Day weekend, but on Monday night, the game-face comes back. Tuesday I am back at the line and ready to rumble.
